High-Stakes Heist: Thieves Steal 22 Million Rubles in Cryptocurrency Equipment from Chelyabinsk Mining Hotel

In a carefully planned operation, thieves have stolen cryptocurrency mining equipment from a mining hotel in Chelyabinsk, Russia. The crime was confirmed by the Main Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the region. The total damage is estimated at a staggering 22 million rubles, as reported by the victim, a 42-year-old local businessman.

The stolen equipment was part of a “mining hotel,” a facility that hosts mining hardware for cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Such hotels have become popular due to the difficulties of storing large, noisy, and power-hungry equipment at home. Unfortunately for this entrepreneur, his security measures proved inadequate. The criminals managed to disable the security cameras and alarm system before taking the equipment.

Notably, this isn’t the first time the mining hotel has been targeted. In a previous incident, equipment worth 2 million rubles was stolen, and the police couldn’t catch the perpetrators. Clearly learning from their initial success, the thieves upped their game this time around. They managed to take all the remaining equipment in two separate approaches.

The owner of the mining hotel also supplies computers and food to local schools. He had recently started the crypto mining hotel business, providing space, cooling, and communications for customer-owned mining gear. Given the magnitude of the loss, a thorough police investigation is underway. Law enforcement authorities are considering initiating criminal proceedings under Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which covers theft.
