“Green” Centers in Siberia: Russia Grows Mining

Several Siberian regions announced plans in 2025 to launch a series of “green” mining facilities primarily powered by hydro and wind energy. Despite certain legal restrictions, organizers aim to leverage inexpensive electricity from hydro plants and the region’s cool climate, which lowers cooling expenses. Early forecasts project investments topping 15 bln rubles.

Some initiatives have already entered the infrastructure preparation phase, acquiring modular units designed for extreme cold conditions. The combined capacity of new sites could surpass 300MW, and part of the farms will offer hosting services. Experts note that such activity may draw international miners if stable tariffs are guaranteed.

Nevertheless, analysts emphasize geopolitical risks and potential tax law changes. Regional officials stress they will intensify oversight to prevent illegal power consumption. Overall, observers anticipate these “green” data centers will drive technological advancement and generate new job opportunities.
