Drug Raid Unveils Bitcoin Mining Side Hustle, Shocking Chilean Authorities

In an unexpected turn during a routine drug bust, Chile’s investigative police (PDI) stumbled upon a Bitcoin mining operation. The Anti-Narcotics Brigade descended on a house in Santiago’s La Cisterna neighborhood on September 6. It was the unit’s third raid against this particular group. Law enforcement seized 36 kilos of marijuana, a printing press for ecstasy pills, 43 grams of ketamine, and a full-fledged computer setup designed for Bitcoin mining, according to decrypt.

The operation revealed interconnected machines emitting large amounts of heat and noise. Because of the unusual find, authorities brought in the Cybercrime Brigade. Experts confirmed the equipment was mining Bitcoin, a first in Chilean law enforcement history. Eduardo Gatica, head of the Anti-Narcotics Brigade, called the event “unprecedented.”

Police confiscated 19 mining machines, though only ten were operational. Luis Orellana, Chief of Santiago’s Cyber Crime Unit, said the local electrical grid couldn’t support all 19 machines simultaneously. Authorities suspect the mining operation was a front for laundering drug money. They allege that the criminals purchased the machines using income from drug trafficking and converted their earnings to Bitcoin.

Prosecutor Carlos Yáñez Díaz referred to the link between drug trafficking and Bitcoin mining as a “novel” method. While this isn’t Chile’s first encounter with cryptocurrency in criminal activities, it’s the first time such a direct link has been established. Previously, a criminal syndicate known as the Tren de Aragua was found to possess $4.5 million in digital assets.

As crypto becomes a go-to for criminal enterprises, the need for vigilant law enforcement efforts grows. The unique intertwining of drug trafficking and cryptocurrency mining in this case highlights the evolving nature of crime in the digital age.
