Crusoe Energy Announces Multibillion-Dollar AI Data Center in Texas

Crusoe Energy, a pioneering Bitcoin mining company that utilizes wasted natural gas, has revealed plans for a new multibillion-dollar data center in partnership with energy tech firm Lancium. Announced on July 18, 2024, this ambitious project will be located in Texas and focus on artificial intelligence (AI) applications, according to Crypto.

The initial phase involves constructing a 200-megawatt data center, which is part of a larger plan to scale up to 1.2 gigawatts at Lancium Clean Campus. Once operational, each data center building will support up to 100,000 GPUs on a single integrated network fabric, significantly enhancing AI training and inference capabilities. Crusoe’s co-founder and CEO, Chase Lochmiller, highlighted the project’s goal to host the world’s largest GPU clusters, accelerating breakthroughs in AI technology.

The new data center represents a significant milestone for Crusoe Energy, which has been leveraging wasted natural gas for Bitcoin mining since its founding in 2018. The company raised $350 million in a Series C funding round in April 2022, led by G2 Venture Partners and supported by Polychain Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, Founders Fund, and Winklevoss Capital.

Crusoe Energy’s partnership with Lancium also underscores Texas’ leadership in renewable energy. Lochmiller expressed excitement about working in Abilene, citing the city’s support and the opportunity to sustainably power future AI advancements. The Lancium data center is expected to be operational by 2025.
