California Grows Solar, Yet Gas Remains Uncut

Recent reports from local operators reveal a substantial increase in solar power across California, now averaging 35% of the state’s daytime energy production. However, gas usage remains steady, particularly during morning and evening hours when solar power is unavailable. Analysts attribute this to insufficient storage infrastructure, resulting in excess midday electricity that goes to waste.

Data over the past three years indicate that total gas consumption in California’s energy mix has barely decreased. Instead, a more pronounced gap has emerged between midday and off-peak hours. Experts argue that expanding renewables without large-scale battery deployment or other storage solutions will do little to cut reliance on fossil fuels.

State officials are debating new subsidy programs and tax benefits for energy-storage projects. Some companies are already proposing innovative methods to harness solar output, but the costs remain high. In the view of specialists, a more comprehensive approach to resource storage will be the linchpin in achieving carbon neutrality.
