Bitcoin Mining Heat Used to Support Canadian Greenhouses

Bitcoin miner and hardware manufacturer Canaan is expanding its efforts to reuse computing energy by supplying heat from mining operations to greenhouses in Canada. The initiative aims to improve energy efficiency while lowering operating costs for agricultural facilities.
According to Canaan, the company is partnering with Bitforest Investment on a 3-megawatt proof-of-concept project in Manitoba. The program will recover heat generated by Avalon mining systems and redirect it as a supplemental heat source for greenhouse operations.
Liquid cooling enables heat recovery
The pilot project is expected to run for an initial 24 months and relies on Canaan’s liquid cooling technology. This system captures thermal energy produced during mining and uses it to preheat intake water for greenhouses. As a result, facilities can reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based heating systems.
Canaan Chairman and CEO Nangeng Zhang said the project is designed to create a data-driven and scalable model. He emphasized that computing infrastructure can play a broader role in energy sustainability, especially in colder climates where heating demand is high.
The deployment includes 360 liquid-cooled servers. Bitforest confirmed that its Manitoba operations focus on tomato production. By recycling waste heat, the project is expected to improve greenhouse efficiency and lower environmental impact.
Sustainability trends amid mining pressure
The Canadian greenhouse initiative highlights a growing trend among bitcoin miners. As mining difficulty rises and profitability remains under pressure, operators are increasingly exploring alternative energy strategies.
Canaan previously launched a wind-powered mining site in Texas. Elsewhere, Phoenix Group announced a hydro-powered facility in Ethiopia, while Sangha Renewables introduced a solar-backed mining operation in Texas.
According to CoinWarz data, bitcoin mining difficulty reached record levels in 2025 and continues to increase. In this environment, projects that combine mining with energy reuse and agriculture may offer a path toward more resilient and sustainable operations.
