American Bitcoin Adds 3 EH/s With New Miner Purchase

American Bitcoin announced a major expansion of its Bitcoin mining capacity. The company purchased 11,298 new ASIC mining machines. Once deployed, the equipment will add approximately 3.05 exahashes per second of computing power.
The machines are expected to be delivered and installed in March at the Drumheller mining facility in Alberta, Canada. After deployment, American Bitcoin’s fleet will reach 89,242 miners. The company’s owned hashrate will increase to about 28.1 EH/s.
Based on the announced specifications, the hardware appears consistent with Bitmain’s Antminer S21 XP. Each unit delivers roughly 270 TH/s with an efficiency of about 13.5 J/TH. This model is considered one of the most efficient Bitcoin mining devices available today.
Drumheller Mining Site Returns to Operation
The expansion also signals the return of the Drumheller site. The facility was shut down in March 2024 by Hut 8, the infrastructure partner behind American Bitcoin.
At the time, Hut 8 cited high electricity costs and voltage issues on Alberta’s AESO power grid. The company relocated more efficient machines to its Medicine Hat facility. Older equipment was retired.
However, the Drumheller lease remained active. The site was kept as a strategic option for future expansion. In January, local media reported construction activity at the location. Observers were unsure whether the site was being dismantled or refurbished.
The latest announcement confirms the facility will resume operations as a Bitcoin mining center rather than transition to an AI data center.
Scaling Strategy in the Mining Industry
American Bitcoin said the purchase aligns with its strategy to accumulate Bitcoin below market prices. The company focuses on deploying high-efficiency hardware while optimizing electricity costs.
Key expansion metrics include:
- 11,298 new ASIC miners purchased;
- about 3.05 EH/s additional hashrate;
- total fleet: 89,242 miners;
- total hashrate: around 28.1 EH/s;
- fleet efficiency: about 16 J/TH.
Competition in the Bitcoin mining sector continues to intensify. Network difficulty remains near record highs. As a result, miners prioritize efficiency and large-scale operations.
Some North American miners are shifting toward AI and HPC infrastructure. However, American Bitcoin is doubling down on large-scale Bitcoin mining. The Drumheller restart illustrates this strategic direction.
