Russia began to suppress the illegal mining of cryptocurrencies in residential buildings

Russia began to identify illegal miners who are engaged in the mining of cryptocurrency in the home. According to Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Snikkars, this is based on the volume of energy consumption, as well as the change in the load profile.

Snikkars also noted that there is no regulation of cryptocurrency mining. However, it is already possible to prove in court that electricity was used not only for household needs.

By this point, there are at least ten times, when power supply companies could recover the difference between the cost of electricity for businesses and households from illegal miners. One of the first to assess the load on substations was in the Irkutsk region.

If suspicions arise, inspectors are sent to the tenants to conduct an inspection. After that, the tenants receive a bill with the rates for the business, or this fact is proved in court. An increase in energy consumption of 30% or more is suspicious. During the inspection, electrical appliances may also be inspected and, in case of detection of mining installations, a corresponding act is drawn up.

In the case of illegal connection to the power grid, the miner faces not only a fine but also criminal liability. It is reported that similar precedents already exist in court practice.
